A Monthly Artistic Initiative

Quarantine life has left me recognizing the lack + forever-long desire to get back to the simple pleasures of drawing, sketching & painting — artistic endeavors I’ve always loved and appreciated so much, but haven’t had time to do, thanks to #adultlife and #responsibilities (!!!)

Being home these last few weeks has inspired me to schedule more time to make these happen (+ more often!) With that being said, I’m kicking off a personal monthly initiative where I dive into an artistic medium of choice and explore a theme — whatever is at the forefront of my design interests at the time — and curate a mini exhibition which will evolve and be displayed on the lovely wall space above my bed.

This month, I’m inspired by the abstract and gestural drawings of Gerhard Richter:

I was instantly drawn to the refined simplicity and dynamic of texture, tone, and stoke in this series.

After lots of prelim explorations with scribbles + shading, I found myself gravitating to simple, continuous linework - ultimately developing a theme where two opposing groupings of lines are conjoined by a single stroke. Interestingly, these explorations left me reflecting on the notion of connection — especially during these strange times of social distancing (a term I never even knew existed), and how outreach, (even the smallest) can offer connectivity between two elements.
