An innately temporal experience of making and giving, the process of cardmaking is ever-fleeting. This archive captures a selection of handmade explorations before they were given away. Each is influenced by my personal associations of home and the translation of various architectural qualities into paper form.

"Before he is cast into the world, man is laid inside the cradle of the house."
Gaston Bachelard // The Poetics of Space
Like my recollections of home, the card embodies the personal, familiar, and comforting. When I create my cards, I consider how these notions can be manifested in order for me to share a piece of my home with others. I subconsciously pull inspiration from my architectural background, considering how various qualities of light, weight, texture, and scale can be translated into paper form in order to heighten the card-making, and ultimately -- the card-giving -- process for the receivers of my cards.

"In their singularity these fragments of a house—a glass window, a wood sauna, a stone path, a garden gate—disclose little of significance. But through layering and superimposition, through the “art of discovery” and correct combination, the construction materials and the images created by them have the capacity to inspire reverie, an aspect fundamental to the existence of a house."

When I select materials, I consider the authentic, haptic quality of each element. Through intentional combinations, layerings, shifts, and juxtapositions, specific characteristics of each piece begin to be revealed in subtle, new ways. Sometimes a photograph is included to evoke a fond memory. Most often, sentiment is expressed through written word. Together, these elements highlight a consciousness of the handmade, an affinity for a refined simplicity, and a mindfulness towards material, quality, and tactility.
